Broadway is getting its first Western in decades, as the iconic High Noon heads to the stage – Michael Arden is directing as Eric Roth adapts the screenplay.
Here’s something a bit different. It has been announced that 1952 film High Noon is to be adapted for the stage.
The plot, which unfolds in real time, follows a town marshal whose ethical stance is tested when he must decide whether to flee or stay and face down a gang of vicious killers.
Directed by Fred Zinnemann, the film has come to be regarded as a classic of the genre. Marshall Will Kane was the great Gary Cooper’s defining role, with Grace Kelly as his wife Amy Fowler Kane. Ian MacDonald played the villainous Frank Miller.
Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth is adapting Carl Foreman’s Oscar nominated screenplay, with Tony award winner Michael Arden directing.
Karen S. Kramer, the widow of original producer Stanley Kramer, said of the play “We are blessed that the future of High Noon is now in the capable hands of such talents as one of the esteemed voices of our time, writer playwright Eric Roth and the stellar producer Paula Wagner. The legacy of Stanley Kramer’s High Noon is safely upheld with these two great artists. We look forward to the re-imagined story for future generations”.
A premiere date has not yet been announced, but if it is successful then a transfer to the West End is likely.
