Guillermo del Toro unveils first images, details from stop-motion Pinocchio film

The celebrated filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has revealed captivating images and fascinating details from his forthcoming Netflix adaptation of Pinocchio. Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion version of Pinocchio is due to arrive on Netflix later this year and the filmmaker has revealed images and details to Vanity Fair, which give us a degree of insight of what to expect from the anticipated adaptation. Perhaps of most significance is the filmmaker’s decision to ground the fairy tale in a real-world setting. The World War II era has proved to be creatively fertile ground for del Toro in the past with films like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone exploring the impact of fascism upon the world. Pinocchio looks set to continue this theme of del Toro’s, with his adaptation taking place in pre-World War II Italy where fascism is on the rise.

In the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s new stop-motion animated movie, “real” is a given. “I have never believed that transformation be demanded to gain love.”

As is typical from del Toro, we can also expect horror elements to feature within the narrative. In fact, the director has talked about how to his mind, the character of Pinocchio is very similar to a classic horror creature, Frankenstein’s Monster, stating: “I’ve always been very intrigued by the links between Pinocchio and Frankenstein. They are both about a child that is thrown into the world. They are both created by a father who then expects them to figure out what’s good, what’s bad, the ethics, the morals, love, life, and essentials, on their own. I think that was, for me, childhood. You had to figure it out with very limited experience.” Despite possessing that darkness at its core, the film will be family-oriented which will be important: after all, del Toro’s Pinocchio project is competing against a rival live action version of the fairy tale with the heavyweight talents of Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, meaning it will need all the eyeballs it can get. We’re intrigued to see how this will play out, but the images and details that del Toro has revealed so far have us very excited indeed.
