The latest Playstation Productions project – Gran Turismo – will be with us in little more than a year, despite only just having been announced.
It was revealed just last month that PlayStation Productions had put another of its video game titles into development as a live action film. Gran Turismo, the long-running driving simulator will be getting the big screen adaptation treatment, with District 9's Neill Blomkamp directing.
However, the surprising addition to this story is the release date: Sony has announced that the film is set to release in little over a year, despite the fact that cameras haven’t rolled or as far as we’re aware, casting has yet to be set. In fact, only last month Deadline reported that the film was in ‘the very early stages of development’.
It’s a bold move from Sony who seem full of confidence following the positive commercial performance of Uncharted earlier this year, its first release under the PlayStation Productions banner. The studio is pumping out projects at the moment: we’ve already been assured that we’ll be getting a follow-up to Uncharted whilst production is also well underway on a prestige TV series based on the critically-acclaimed game series The Last Of Us that will be with us next year. Not to mention the Ghost Of Tsushima adaptation slated to be directed by Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick films.
And then there’s Gran Turismo, set to be directed by Blomkamp. We can see how the filmmaker’s style could be an excellent fit for a full-blooded driving movie although with this announcement, it looks like we’ll be waiting even longer for the planned follow-up to District 9. Last we heard on that one, he was writing the script alongside star, Sharlto Copley. The only information we have on Gran Turismo is that it is described ‘as a wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player who won a series of Nissan competitions before becoming an actual professional race car driver.’
