A few interesting tidbits have emerged regarding the celebrated director Steve McQueen’s return to to feature filmmaking.
A few key details have been revealed regarding Steve McQueen’s next feature film project, which will be titled Blitz.
As you might expect, McQueen will be writing, directing and producing the project, which will be an original story based around the life on Londoners during World War II when German air assaults became part of everyday life. McQueen’s last feature film, Widows, was based on the Lynda La Plante novel of the same name and its subsequent TV show. It was quite the watch, but we’re looking forward to the freedom that an original story will give the talented British filmmaker as he approaches Blitz.
Speaking of Widows, McQueen will be working with production company New Regency once more, the company who backed that film, as well as his Oscar-winning feature 12 Years a Slave.
Apple has snapped up the rights to the project and we have to hope that deal includes some kind of theatrical release. All those wide shots of wartime London rendered cinematically by McQueen and his collaborators will surely deserve nothing less than the biggest screen imaginable.
Of course, the director is no stranger to small-screen work either. Blitz will mark McQueen’s first return to feature film making since Widows, as since then he has been focused on creating his Small Axe anthology of films for the BBC, as well as working on several documentaries. One of them, Occupied City is for A24 and will cover the occupation of Amsterdam during World War II. It seems like we’ve been waiting for that one for a long time. One of the most interesting things about McQueen is the multitude of ways in which he approaches storytelling, so we’re sure when Occupied City arrives it will be worth the wait to see how he has used the documentary format.
We’ll bring you more details on Blitz, including plot and casting, as we hear them, but as one of the UK’s most powerful filmmakers, a new Steve McQueen project is always something to look forward to. These details have certainly piqued our interest and we’re keeping everything crossed for news of a theatrical release.
