Anthony Hopkins is to take on the role of famous psychoanalyst Freud in an upcoming biopic.
Anthony Hopkins is no stranger to playing psychiatrists, though his next role is unlikely to include fava beans and a nice Chianti.
Freud’s Last Session, based on the play of the same name by Mark St. Germain, itself based on the book The Question of God by Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, Jr, imagines a scenario wherein Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, invites Chronicles of Narnia author C.S Lewis over for a debate about the existence of God.
Hopkins famously played Lewis in Richard Attenborough’s 1993 film version of William Nicholson’s Shadowlands, opposite Debra Winger.
Germain will adapt his own play for the screen, to be directed by Matthew Brown and produced by Alan Greisman, Rick Nicita and Meg Thomson. It will begin shooting later this year.
It is not yet known who will play opposite Hopkins as Lewis, but even at this early stage, this is a tête-à-tête that has ‘awards season’ written all over it.
