Games Of Thrones star Kit Harrington is set to star in Mary’s Monster – an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein that tells of her struggle to write it.
The film, which promises to bring period drama and the story of Frankenstein's creation to a younger audience, will go on sale at Cannes Film Festival. Instead of retreading the original Frankenstein tale, the film is going high concept – exploring the mind of author Mary Shelley, her struggles to get her seminal novel written and her relationship with her creation.
British director Farren Blackburn is helming the movie, with I Am Mother's Clara Rugaard, Sebastian De Souza (The Great), and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (of CODA) starring alongside Harrington. Producing the film is independent company Fulwell 73 (who worked on Sony Pictures’ Cinderella starring Camila Cabello. Make of that what you will), which is teaming up with Rose Pictures.
Harrington is reportedly set to play The Monster, with Rugaard as Mary Shelley, Walsh-Peelo as her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and De Souza in the role of Lord Byron. Further cast announcements are expected soon.
The film has been described as “couture fashion meets gothic horror as we view their 19th century world through today’s lens against a backdrop of contemporary music, spoken word, sex, drugs, and Baroque ‘n roll.” It certainly sounds like it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
Filming is set to begin in August this year, and we’ll bring you more news as we hear it.
