Universal delays animated features Super Mario Bros and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish

Universal has pushed the release of Super Mario Bros into 2023, resulting in the next Puss In Boots film’s date also changing. The upcoming Super Mario Bros project that is being co-financed by Universal and Nintendo has been delayed, with the film being pushed back from its original release date of Christmas 2022 to Easter of next year. The project is set to feature the voice talents of Chris Pratt as the beloved Italian plumber and both Universal and Nintendo will be hoping that upon release, the film can make the same kind of splash at the box office that Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and other family films have made of late. Whilst Universal and Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind the Despicable Me films is handling production, it was the original video game’s designer and Nintendo leader, Shigeru Miyamoto who announced the delay on social media, stating “after consulting with Chris-san, [producer Chris Meledandri] my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.” The move means that the upcoming Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is also now delayed too. That animated feature was set to release in September of this year but has now been pushed back to fill that vacated Christmas spot. All involved will hope that Mario’s journey to the screen is more successful than the 1993 live action version, and smoother than that of his old rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, an animated family film featuring a beloved video game character that faced its own issues throughout production. We’ve yet to see any footage from Super Mario Bros yet, but those behind the film will be hoping for a smoother journey from here on in.
