Blue Sky’s final film – scrapped by Disney – comes back to life at Netflix

Nimona was scrapped following Disney’s takeover of Fox, but has been revived by the streaming platform with plans for a 2023 release. Disney has faced all sorts of negative headlines of late for refusing to take a stance in supporting the LGBTQ+ community. As the state of Florida introduces ‘Don’t Say Gay’ legislation, Pixar employees have spoken out about LGBTQ+ censorship issued from their parent company whilst Disney employees staged a walkout last month to protest the company’s ineffectual stance thus far. Whilst that controversy continues, a smaller story of an LGBTQ+ project being sidelined by Disney has also been rumbling in the background. Nimona, a feature-length animation featuring Chloë Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed was in production at Blue Sky Studios, the animation division of 20th Century Fox that Disney shuttered when it completed its takeover of Fox. The project itself sounds brilliant, so it comes as great news that after lying dormant for some time, Nimona has been revived and will be coming to Netflix, who has partnered with Annapurna Pictures to bring the film to life. Spies in Disguise's director, Troy Quane is now helming the project, having taken over the reins from Patrick Osborne. The synopsis reads: ‘In the LGBTQ+-themed Nimona, Knight Ballister Boldheart (Ahmed) is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Moretz), a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is an inclusive story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.’ We know the film is coming at some point in 2023 and has reportedly been in production since last year.
