KillRoy Was Here is a planned franchise that writer/director Kevin Smith is working on, and will be releasing via NFTs.
There’s a sense that the NFT bubble is bursting a little even before it’s got fully started, although countering that, I’m writing it in the week where the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK has asked the Royal Mint to create an official NFT. So there’s that.
If you’re unfamiliar with what an NFT is, it stands for non-fungible token, and in its current context, refers to what amounts to a unique digital receipt or collectable. There are more cynical definitions out there too. But also, it’s worth noting that for the growing backlash and displeasure being aimed – with some justification – towards NFTs, they are helping indie filmmakers get some movies going.
Kevin Smith is one of the highest profile filmmakers to embrace them, and he’s pressing ahead with his previously announced plan to release his new movie KillRoy Was Here as NFTs.
The plan is to release the movie before the summer, and it’ll be available as a collection 5,555 individual NFTs. What the successful purchasers of those NFTs then choose to do with them is up to them. “My dream is for ‘KillRoy’ to be its own self-thriving franchise within the world of crypto and NFTs, without ever having to step outside of the blockchain”, Smith told CoinDesk.
There are plans in due course for a wider release of the film, it’s reported, but how that works alongside the planned NFT rollout remains to be seen.
Smith’s also shot Clerks III, but that’s going to be release by more conventional means, with Lionsgate picking up its distribution rights.
