Director Kathryn Bigelow;s next project will mark her first film since 2017 – and Netflix has stumped up to make it happen.
Kathyrn Bigelow hasn’t made a film since the searingly powerful
Detroit in 2017 and compared to filmmakers of a similar stature, the Oscar-winning director’s development slate is on the thin side too. Whilst the first part of Bigelow’s career produced some films that we adore such as
Point Break and
Strange Days, the most recent phase of her filmography includes critical and commercial successes in the form of
The Hurt Locker and
Zero Dark Thirty. Whilst 2017’s
Detroit struggled to recoup its budget back at the box office, there’s no denying it’s a powerful watch.
Whatever the reasons for her time away from set, it’s great news that Bigelow is once again headed for the director’s chair, in this case to direct
Aurora for Netflix.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed the news, which also includes a brief synopsis:
‘Aurora follows the events of a solar storm that knocks out most of humanity’s power grids and focuses on the personal story of a divorced mother who must now do everything she can to protect her teenager and her estranged brother, a wealthy Silicon Valley CEO who has built a luxurious bunker in the desert for just such a disaster.’
The film is based on a novel by David Koepp, the renowned Hollywood screenwriter (and sometimes director) who numbers
Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible and
Jurassic Park among his screen credits. Koepp is adapting his book for the screen too.
Whilst the budget is said to be above $100m, the report suggests that the project is early in development, but plans are afoot at Netflix to fast-track it into production. We’ll keep you posted and let you know as we hear more.
