Gerard McMurray, director of The First Purge, has come aboard the film Black, based on the 2016 indie comic of the same name.
Black, the upcoming project which imagines a world where only Black people have superpowers, has found its director. The film, which is being produced by Studio 8 and distributed by Warner Bros, will be helmed by
The First Purge’s Gerard McMurray.
McMurray is in demand at the moment, having started out as a producer on 2013’s
Fruitvale Station, that was directed by Ryan Coogler. He has also been tapped to helm
Booker for Sony as well as
The Formula, a Netflix racing car drama starring John Boyega and Robert De Niro.
The First Purge made over $130m from a $13m production budget so McMurray’s star is high and he seems to have the pick of many a project.
The film adaptation of
Black will centre ‘on a young man who discovers his powers after surviving a violent crime. He soon finds himself in the middle of a war over the future of humanity in a world in which a secret society seeks to control the empowered and their abilities.’
