A few details have emerged on the long-awaited live action return of the mighty He-Man in a new Masters Of The Universe film.
Fans of the Masters Of The Universe franchise have been waiting for He-Man to return to the silver screen ever since 1987’s Masters Of The Universe ended with Frank Langella’s Skeletor boldly promising his return. In characteristic Skeletor style, that proved to a false promise and decades on, fans of the Masters Of The Universe brand have been waiting patiently for another movie.
After years and years of stalled starts and false dawns, Netflix is now in control of the rights. As is usual with the streamer, things have finally moved into gear although even the powerhouse production company has endured a few bumps along the way too. But all seems to be moving forwards now and the film’s directors, Aaron and Adam Nee have been chatting a little about their upcoming take on He-Man and his colourful compatriots:
“I think with Masters of the Universe, for us, from growing up with it, we just wanted to make something that captured that fun and colour and bright and vibrance and the empowerment that it gave little kids. We just wanted to capture that. So that’s what we hope to have”, they remarked.
Whilst Black Adam actor, Noah Centineo was originally set to play He-Man, that didn’t work out, whilst the current incumbent of the Sword of Power is West Side Story’s Kyle Allen. “Yeah, and Kyle’s perfect for it,” added the Nee brothers, stating “we’re treating it as an origin story, and Kyle, there’s not a more perfect person to come in and embody that.”
Netflix’s Masters Of The Universe animated series, with Kevin Smith as showrunner, has given Masters Of The Universefans a taste of animated action, much like the original cartoon. However, a live action feature has proved much harder to get off the ground over the years, with talent including Jon M Chu, Richard Wenk, Terry Rossio, Chris McKay, McG and David S Goyer all trying and failing to get the film into production. Still, it looks like this time might just be the charm and we’re on board for ‘fun and colour and bright and vibrance’. We’ll let you know as we hear more.
