Criterion Collection announces its UK titles for May 2022

Three more films join The Criterion Collection in the UK this May, and they’re all up for preorder now: more details here. Growing at a rate of three releases a month is The Criterion Collection range of Blu-rays, a range of premium disc releases aimed very much at cinephiles. And in the UK, the identity of May 2022’s releases has now been revealed. First up comes Bertrand Tavernier’s Round Midnight, a 1986 movie about a New York jazz veteran played by Dexter Gordon, who relocates to Paris. Herbie Hancock adds the score, and the disc release comes with legacy documentary work, as well as new interviews, a new essay and a remaster of the film. It’s out on May 9^th, and you can find out more here. On May 30^th comes the 1984 Japanese movie The Funeral, from writer/director Juzo Itami. This one follows a woman who’s a successful actor, but also dealing with the sudden death of her father. Not seen this one, but the blurb promises “cinema’s most epic sandwich handoff”. Can’t argue with that. The disc features new interviews, a new restoration, new subtitles and an essay too. Find more about it all here. Then on the same day comes a film I absolutely have seen: the wonderful Double Indemnity, from Billy Wilder and co-writer Raymond Chandler. Barbara Stanwyck takes the lead role here in a terrific film noir. New interviews, a new commentary, some old documentaries, an audio commentary and radio adaptations of the story are all included.
