All involved in the recent Uncharted film have been talking about a possible sequel following the box office’s verdict on the first movie.
Whilst not all reviews for Sony’s
Uncharted have been kind, the film continues to do well at the box office. (We liked it though, and you can catch our review
here.) The film has now zoomed past $140m at the box office too, and opened in America over the weekend to solid numbers.
With no major blockbusters releasing until
The Batman arrives on March 3rd,
Uncharted may continue to hoover up lots and lots of those multiplex dollars. Sony’s CEO put out a company-wide email thanking all involved for persevering through a Covid shutdown and making the film a success, writing: ‘I want to thank all of the filmmakers, the wonderful cast and crew, and especially our friends at PlayStation Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment for their support. And of course, I want to thank each and every one of you for your creativity, dedication and belief.’
Whilst Sony’s purse strings may be loosening in anticipation of financing an
Uncharted sequel, director Ruben Fleischer is keen to be back on board also, telling
Deadline, “I can’t help but hope we’ll be doing a sequel. I think Sony is appropriately superstitious and they don’t plan things without knowing how they’ll be received.”
A second blockbuster franchise starring the incredibly popular Tom Holland would certainly have been Sony’s intention and it looks increasingly like that’s what’s going to happen. The film’s strong performance also heralds a bright start for Sony’s PlayStation Productions imprint, which has major plans afoot for more video game-to-film adaptations. What was your take on
Uncharted? Are you looking forward to a sequel? Let us know in the comments below…
