New Line Cinema have commissioned a sequel to 2021ās violent and fun video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat.
If you were a teenager in the 1990s, itās time to run through the streets yelling ā
Mortal Kombatā at the top of your lungs once more, with the news that weāre getting another
Mortal Kombat movie. The memorable 1990s advertising campaign that preceded the video gameās launch onto home systems did an impressive job of sidestepping its gory reputation, whilst still reminding bloodthirsty teenage gamers that
Mortal Kombat was definitely part of the zeitgeist. And why? Because you could rip off other playerās heads, pull out their spines and show them to your opponent before they died. Standard teenage fare back then.
2021ās
Mortal Kombat rebooted the movie series and whilst it certainly wouldnāt become the cultural phenomenon that the original games were, it was a faithful enough adaptation, fun and gory, leaning into the inherent silliness of the premise and delivering for fans of the franchise, at least.
The first rebooted film was released last year by New Line Cinema, part of Warner Bros, meaning like all of the studioās 2021 slate, it debuted simultaneously on HBO Max and in cinemas, in the US at least. Ultimately, studio bosses must be pleased with the numbers that the film generated as a sequel has been commissioned, meaning weāll have another chance to satiate our thirst for fatalities and acts of bone-crunching pugilism.
The script for this one is being written by Jeremy Slater, who recently penned
Moon Knight for Marvel and even more recently was announced to be working on
Thread with James Wan. No announcement has been made as to whether director Simon McQuoid is back once more. We can certainly think of a couple of ways the sequel could build on the first film, but we wonāt mention them here, just in case you havenāt seen the first movie yet. Have at it in the comments thoughā¦
