Like it or not, the star-studded Don’t Look Up smashes Netflix’s own viewing records, with the not-quiet debate about the movie working its magic.
If you reside anywhere close to social media, you might have noticed a fair amount of discussion about Adam McKay’s recent film,
Don’t Look Up. It’s a while since we’ve seen a movie that seems to have put such a dividing line between critics and audiences. The former didn’t seem too impressed, the latter appear to have taken to the film an awful lot more.
The rampant conversation surrounding the film – which includes Oscar winners Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio – has been music to Netflix’s algorithms too. And, since it debuted on the service on Christmas Eve following a very brief theatrical run, viewing figures for it have soared.
Now Netflix has a habit of only releasing viewing statistics when it’s got good news to tell, and it seems to in this case. The film has notched up – and here’s a different way to count it – 152.29 million viewing hours in the week from December 27
th to January 2
nd. That’s the highest number for one of its films ever, breaking a record that had been set a month or two before by
Red Notice (the Dwayne Johnson-Gal Gadot-Ryan Reynolds action film that lots of people have watched and already forgotten). Even appreciating that the film is quite a long one, that still appears to be rather an impressive number.
Netflix is giving an awards push for
Don’t Look Up as well, so there may be some more rocket fuel behind it yet. It’s available on the service, as you probably guessed, right now.
