Keanu Reeves has been discussing the progress of the planned comic book adaptation, which he has co-written.
Not content with enjoying a cinematic renaissance and starring in a video game (2020’s Cyberpunk 2077), Keanu Reeves was also immortalised in comic book form earlier this year with the debut of the Boom! Studios character, BRZRKR. The story of an immortal warrior was not only co-written by Reeves, but the lead character happens to bear his likeness too.
It was reported back in March, when the comic book made its debut, that Netflix had snapped up the rights to the comic book and was planning on making a movie – starring Reeves of course – as well as an anime series based upon the following premise:
‘BRZRKR follows “an immortal warrior’s 80,000-year fight through the ages. The man known only as ‘B’ is half-mortal and half-god, cursed and compelled to violence … even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge — working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires — the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence … and how to end it.
Wheels have been turning as the project edges ever closer to production, but Reeves himself has popped up to offer an update on the project, stating that “we’re working with Netflix who have been very cool. They’re going to let us do an R-rated story which is cool. My ambition or hope is not to do a filmed version of the comic book so that they’ll have things in common, definitely the main character and his kind of rule set, but that we can take it to other places as well.”
Reeves is especially looking forward to seeing how the anime version widens the story he has co-created, much in the same way that The Animatrix widened the storytelling possibilities of one of his most iconic roles, Neo in The Matrix. “We’re talking to a couple of different animation companies and trying to figure that out. And, again, for me I’m hoping to be inspired and influenced…there are some rules to the story, but I also want other creators to do their version of it. So I’m hoping to do a different version of a metaverse where in the sense having different storytellers with one set of rules but go other places with it.”
Whilst we’re still some time away from the cameras rolling on this one, it’s good to hear that progress continues to be made, despite Reeves’ busy schedule. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
