The trailer lands for Paul Verhoeven’s highly-anticipated historical drama Bendetta, soon to release here in the UK.
IFC films has launched a new teaser trailer for Bendetta, the historical epic featuring a lesbian affair between nuns in 17th century France. The highly-anticipated film, which is set to arrive in cinemas and on demand in early December, looks to contain the same combustible blend of sex and violence that Verhoeven has made his name with over the years, whether its the glossy eroticism of 1992’s Basic Instinct or the darker rape-revenge theme of his last film, Elle.
Reportedly based on a true story, the film adapts Judith C Brown’s 1986 book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy. Verhoeven penned the script, along with screenwriter David Birke. The duo’s most recent collaboration before Bendetta was Verhoeven’s most recent film, the aforementioned Elle. The cast includes Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson, Olivier Rabourdin, and Herve Pierre.
The film has been acclaimed on the festival circuit and is set to receive its UK premiere at the London Film Festival next month. MUBI has acquired the UK rights to the film, although it isn’t currently on its streaming platform to watch just yet. No plans have been announced for a cinema release here in the UK but we’d expect it to get one.
Until we hear more, here’s the film’s official synopsis, with the trailer below.
‘A 17th-century nun in Italy suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair. Based on Judith C. Brown’s Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy.’
And finally, the trailer…
