Sally Hawkins and Mark Rylance heading a real life golf story with a twist: here’s the trailer for The Phantom Of The Open.
Notwithstanding the majesty of Tin Cup, there’s not a huge box office legacy of successful films based in and around the sport of golf. However, here’s a story that might just turn that around. The Phantom Of The Open is an upcoming film starring Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins, sat around a real-life story from back in 1976.
It’s the tale of a man called Maurice Flitcroft, who entered the British Open golf tournament that year, in spite of not having played the game before. Craig Roberts directs the movie take on what happened, working from a screenplay by the mighty Simon Farnaby.
The first trailer for the film has now landed, and here’s what’s in store…

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN tells the remarkable true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a crane operator and optimistic dreamer from Barrow-in-Furness who, with the support of his family and friends, managed to gain entry to the 1976 British Open qualifying, despite never playing a round of golf before. With pluckiness and unwavering self-belief, Maurice pulls off a series of stunning, hilarious and heartwarming attempts to compete at the highest level of professional golf, drawing the ire of the golfing elite but becoming a British folk hero in the process.
The film debuted to excellent reviews at last year’s London Film Festival. It now has a UK release date of March 18th 2022.
