Has The Suicide Squad sent Warner Bros back exclusively to cinemas again? A new deal in the US suggests so.
There’s been a lot of picking during the past few days over the box office receipts of
The Suicide Squad. The film may have gone to cinemas in the UK, but it went to the HBO Max streaming service at the same time in the US, as all of this year’s Warner Bros releases are set to do.
Is that, then, to blame for the film’s depressed US box office? Some analysts seem to think so, with the film taking $26.5m in its American opening weekend, around half what’d been expected. The blame is being sliced between unrealistic expectations and the number of people who chose to see the film at home. Either way, it seems Warner Bros is now reversing – as it’d hinted it would – its theatrical policy.
As such, it’s now reported that discussions with the AMC group – that owns Odeon in the UK too – have come to fruition, with a 45 day theatrical window being re-established.
This won’t affect things in the UK, but it does mean that a studio is unlikely to experiment so overtly with a day and date streaming strategy again for some time. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more, but for now, you can read more about the deal here.
