Paddington and Paul King comment on that odd Citizen Kane story

Finally, Paddington Bear responds to overtaking Citizen Kane on Rotten Tomatoes, in a story that turned into one of the week’s biggest. There’s been quite a furore over the last few days about Orson Welles’ 1942 classic, Citizen Kane, losing its perfect 100% score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. This is especially true given that the film has now been replaced at the top of Rotten Tomatoes’ list by Paddington 2, released in 2017. Whilst it seems more than a little absurd to be comparing the two films, not to mention that the binary nature of review aggregation tends to skew towards such shallow comparisons, at least Paddington 2’s director and its star don’t seem to be taking it too seriously. Paddington Bear himself took to Twitter, not to throw a hard stare at Citizen Kane (as he infamously did back in 2018 when the Deadpool actor threw some shade his way,) but instead to classily play down the whole Rotten Tomatoes silliness in classic bumbling Paddington style…

I do hope Mr Kane won't be too upset when he hears I've overtaken him with rotten tomatoes.

Meanwhile, the film’s director, Paul King, also joined in the general silliness by adding a tongue-in-cheek response himself when speaking with The Hollywood Reporter:  “It’s extremely lovely to be on any list which includes Citizen Kane, but it is obviously quite an eccentric list that goes from Citizen Kane to Paddington 2, so I’ll try not to take it too seriously. I won’t let it go too much to my head and immediately build my Xanadu. But I have been cooking up a model just in case.” We’re hoping that King’s next project, the Willy Wonka prequel story Wonka, won’t be the Xanadu that he mentions, a reference to the famously messy musical feature. Meanwhile, Paddington Bear will feature next in the announced Paddington 3. We’re sure he won’t let all of this absurd nonsense go to his head either.
