Director Paul Greengrass’ next film will adapt the tale of a rogue president and those that seek to stop him: more details here.
Paul Greengrass’ latest film, News Of The World, has earned an impressive critical reception, including recognition in the usual awards races. The director, whose documentary style has brought us 22 July, United 93 and a few Bourne films has already lined up his next project though, and it has more than a whiff of the familiar about it.
Based on the 1965 novel by Fletcher Knebel, Night Of Camp David tells the story of ‘a junior U.S. Senator who comes to believe that the President is mentally unbalanced and sliding into paranoia as he seeks closer ties to the Soviet Union, believes a media cabal is out to get him, and wants to annex Canada.’
If all of that sounds like actions of a recent American ex-president, well, you’d be forgiven for making the connection. In fact, Knebel’s novel was re-released in 2018 because of the relevance of its plot during the midst of stuff going on in the world.
Greengrass has boarded the project and will be working with Universal, the studio that backed his Bourne films. Jed Mercurio, who wrote the BBC Bodyguard series, is writing the script. No word as yet on casting or expected production dates but we’ll certainly keep you posted.
