Netflix US and Sony Pictures Entertainment announce a new deal for feature films.
In a statement released today, Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced a āmultiyear, exclusive first pay window licensing deal in the U.S. for theatrically released SPE feature films, beginning with their 2022 film slate.ā This adds to the current pre-existent agreement on animation properties, to encompass all labels and genres in the Sony Pictures portfolio.
What does this mean? Netflix now have first pick of any film released by the SPE group after their initial cinema run, as well as the first look at any films made directly for streaming. Netflix can also select titles from Sonyās vast back catalogue.
This is however currently only in the United States and there is no information on whether this partnership may extend to European territories in the future. It is still note-worthy, as Sony is one of the few film companies that does not have a dedicated streaming service. This deal all but confirms none are in the works.
American Netflix users can look forward to seeing new Sony offerings such as
Morbius and the highly anticipated
Into The Spider-Verse sequel in the very near future.
