The Matilda musical movie has found its Matilda – and also recruited both Emma Thompson and Lashana Lynch.
Finally, it looks as though the big screen adaptation of the acclaimed Matilda musical – based on the book by Roald Dahl – is pressing ahead.
For some time, the team behind the stage production – director Matthew Warchus, writer Dennis Kelly and music genius Tim Minchin – have been attached to the movie take on the show. It’s set to be a co-production between Sony Pictures and Netflix, and originally was due to have filmed last year.
Now, it looks like it’s finally pressing ahead later in 2021, and it’s found its Matilda as well.
Alisha Weir will be taking on the title role, and it’s also been confirmed that Lashana Lynch will be taking on the role of Miss Honey. Meanwhile, Ralph Fiennes had originally been linked with the role of horrible headteacher Miss Trunchbull, but Emma Thompson has now been confirmed as playing the character.
An official statement from director Matthew Warchus seems rather understandably chipper about the project. He said that “Matilda will be an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical, featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars. I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world”.
The musical version is, frankly, really rather brilliant. The story was filmed before of course by director Danny DeVito in the 1990s, with Mara Wilson in the lead role.
No word yet as to a release date for this one. More as we hear it though.
