A24 will distribute The Whale, the next project from Darren Aronofsky following 2017’s mother! – and Brendan Fraser is taking on a lead role.
Consider our interest piqued with this announcement. Maverick filmmaker, Darren Aronofsky hasn’t released a film since 2017’s divisive
mother!, which was a biblically-driven surrealist nightmare that divided audiences and critics. Likewise, we haven’t seen Brendan Fraser adopt leading man status for some time either, although he has continued to put in sterling work across both cinema and TV.
Now, it has been announced (as reported by
Deadline) that the two men are collaborating on
The Whale, Aronofsky’s next film.
The film has been adapted for the screen by Samuel D Hunter, from his own off-Broadway play, which also enjoyed a run here in the UK. The plot follows ‘a reclusive online writing instructor who, weighing in at 600 pounds, lives marooned on a couch. Redemption may be within reach as he tries to reconnect with his estranged, sharp-tongued daughter.’
No other casting has been announced yet. A24 is handling worldwide distribution.
Hunter told Deadline that “adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labour of love for me. This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw
Requiem For A Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”
