Wonder Woman 1984 will be heading to homes in the UK this January, less than a month after the film’s heavily-disrupted cinema release.
Wonder Woman 1984 was only released in the UK on December 16th, and has been picking up really pleasing reviews too. But with much of the country currently stuck in tiers 3 and 4, it means that only a quarter of the UK’s cinemas are currently open and operating.
As such it’s now been confirmed that the film will be heading to premium video on demand quickly, and will be available to rent from a number of digital retailers from January 13th.
For so long seen by cinemas as the picture to ‘save’ the tail-end of 2020, the film released in cinemas even as other tentpole releases were pulled. Yet the movie simply came too late, as the most recent lockdown took away any real chance the movie had of making a box office impact. The film itself has so far earned around $38m in all around the world, a tiny fraction of what it would be expected to gross in ordinary times.
No further information has been given as to which retailers will offer the film, but it has been confirmed that it will be a 48 hour rental.
The movie is also being released as part of a standard subscription to streaming platform HBO Max in the US on Christmas Day, as well as in cinemas, a move that has caused much consternation among various elements of that country’s film industry.
