George Lucas defends Attack Of The Clones dialogue

George Lucas offers a robust defence of Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones in a deluxe new Star Wars book. A new book has lifted the lid a little on the making of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and in it, George Lucas has been defending the often-maligned films. As reported by Digital Spy, in particular Lucas is protective of the mocked dialogue in the second of that trilogy, Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones. Of the conversations between Padme and Anakin in the movie, Lucas argues “it is presented very honestly, it isn’t tongue-in-cheek at all, and it’s played to the hilt. But it is consistent, not only with the rest of the movie, but with the overall Star Wars style”. He adds that “most people don’t understand the style of Star Wars. They don’t get that there’s an underlying motif that is very much like a 1930s Western or Saturday matinee serial. It’s in the more romantic period of making movies and adventure films. And this film is even more of a melodrama than the others”. The book comes from author Paul Duncan, and it’s very much a deluxe publication with, er, a price tag to match.
