Disney is set to announce its movie plans for Disney+ in the next 24 hours – but Black Widow won’t be heading straight to streaming.
Over the next 24 hours, Disney is expected to make clear its plans for upcoming movies and TV shows as part of its investor presentation. The focus of said presentation is set to be its streaming service, Disney+, and the firm is set to continue its large push towards making it the heart of its business.
A piece over at the New York Times has offered some sizeable hints as to what to expect. Confirmation is expected that some films will now pivot to Disney+ debuts, including Pinocchio starring Tom Hanks.
Surprisingly though, the studio is considering more titles to be releases via the ‘premium access’ channel it established for Mulan last September. That with Mulan it opted to bypass cinemas altogether, and instead charge its existing Disney+ subscribers an extra £19.99 for early access to the film.
It had been speculated that this model hadn’t really worked that well – and certainly there was backlash against it from some quarters – yet it’s now believed that other films will get a ‘premium access’ release.
Some movies will be confirmed to debut in cinemas, however. And whilst there had been speculation that the next Marvel film, Black Widow., would bypass cinemas, the article reports that the film “will remain on Disney’s theatrical release calendar for May 7, the people with knowledge of the presentation said”.
