Cameras have begun rolling on Justin Kurzel’s latest film, which follows on the heels of True History Of The Kelly Gang.
It appears that Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel will be staying in his native homeland for his next project. The director first rose to prominence in 2011 with
Snowtown, an adaptation of an Australian-set atrocity. For his latest venture, he’s once again electing to do the same, this time with
Nitram. It’s a a film that will focus on the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, according to
Deadline.
In recent history, ‘the Port Arthur massacre of 28–29 April 1996 was a mass shooting in which 35 people were killed and 23 wounded in Port Arthur, Tasmania. The murderer, Mart
in Bryant, pleaded guilty and was given 35 life sentences without possibility of parole. Fundamental changes of gun control laws within Australia followed the incident. The case is the worst massacre in modern Australia committed by a single person.’
Kurzel’s most recent film was 2019’s striking
True History Of The Kelly Gang. In his relatively short filmography, he’s also taken on Shakespeare in the form of 2015’s
Macbeth and video game adaptations with 2016’s
Assassin’s Creed, both starring Michael Fassbender.
Caleb Landry Jones leads the cast for
Nitram. Judy Davis, Essie Davis and Anthony LaPaglia also star, from a script penned by Shaun Grant, who also wrote
Snowtown. We’ll update you with more news on this project as we hear it.
