Disney has moved its remaining two films of 2020 from its release schedule, further impacting cinema reopening plans.
Further postponements have affected the Christmas movie release schedule, as Disney has delayed the launch of its two remaining films planned for 2020.
Free Guy and
Death On The Nile, both set to be released under the company’s 20th Century Studios banner, were slated to launch in December but have now been removed entirely from the company’s release slate with no new dates set as yet. The company is also reportedly laying off dozens of jobs from its studio division.
Whilst expected, news that the two films have been delayed yet again (both were due to originally make their bow earlier this year, before being delayed to December) is nonetheless a further blow for cinemas to contend with. For UK and European cinemas in particular, they now find themselves facing the prospect of returning from lockdown to an empty Christmas release window, devoid of the big-name films with which to draw audiences back in.
Whilst
Wonder Woman 84 remains on the December schedule for now at least, Warner Bros. is widely expected to delay it too, having already met to discuss the possibility. Sony’s
Peter Rabbit 2 remains on the UK calendar for December. In the US, meanwhile, Universal’s
Freaky and
The Croods: A New Age are also still launching pre-Christmas, most likely because the studio has agreed a shortened theatrical window with the US AMC cinema chain so it can quickly move the film onto premium VoD services.
