Guillermo del Toro’s long-mooted take on Pinocchio is finally going ahead at Netflix, and a star-studded cast has joined the project.
If you happen to be a fan of the Pinocchio story, then bountiful days lie ahead for you. As well as the live action Italian production directed by Matteo Garrone that’s currently playing at cinemas, there’s also the live action Robert Zemeckis version of the story being developed for Disney. That project is currently in negotiations with Tom Hanks to star as we reported here.
However, casting has also been announced for another take on the classic tale, this one being a stop motion animation project developed by the mighty Guillermo del Toro.
UPDATE: del Toro has now confirmed that the film will be ready in the last quarter of 2022. More on that at

The film is being financed for Netflix and as del Toro is helming, the cast is typically stellar. Deadline is reporting that Gregory Mann is in the title role and will be supported by Ewan McGregor as Cricket and David Bradley as Geppetto. Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Finn Wolfhard are also set to appear.
The film will be set against the backdrop of the rise of fascism in Mussolini-era Italy. Of course, the rise of fascism is a theme that the director has explored to thrilling effect in his previous films, The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth. Everything del Toro touches exudes his love for the medium, so we’re really keen to see what he brings to a feature-length stop motion animation, especially with the cast he’s assembled. Filming began in the autumn of 2019. More news as we have it.
